SQL Saturday Lincoln Wrap Up

sqlsat552_webThis past weekend our Solutions Architect Cody Chapman presented at this year's SQL Saturday in Lincoln, Nebraska on the topic "Ping! (No Reply)".

Session Abstract: Oh! ASYNC_NETWORK_IO just went through the roof! What just happened?

Ever wonder how common tasksSolutions Architect such as how servers communicate, how cross-subnet Availability Group failover to your disaster recovery site work, or why ‘they’ always recommend a dedicated network adapter for your WSFC? De-mystifying the networking underneath your databases makes you a stronger database professional. This deep dive technical session will cover many of the critical aspects of enterprise-level networking and how your database servers communicate with the rest of the world. Topics and demonstrations include networking technologies, quality of service, VLANs, routing, monitoring, and trending.

By the end of this interactive session, you will be able to check your own networks for their performance and know how to converse with the networking admins to help improve the overall performance.

The slides have been posted for you to download! Feel free to contact us if you have any questions!

SQL Saturday Minnesota 2016

Heraflux is proud to support and speak at this year's SQL Saturday in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on October 1st.

The Complete Primer to SQL Server Infrastructure - SQL Saturday Minnesota

Heraflux is pleased to announce that we are launching our next round of all-day precon training session at the upcoming SQL Saturday in Minnesota on Friday, September 30 called ‘The Complete Primer to SQL Server Infrastructure Tuning‘.

The focus of the course is to help those new to the enterprise server infrastructure concepts become familiar with the concept and purposes of each layer of the architecture around their databases, and how this knowledge can benefit them as data professionals. Participants will gain exposure to all layers of infrastructure and virtualization underneath SQL Server, from storage all the way through to the SQL Server instance, and will learn how to review and engineer the entire stack with a strong emphasis on SQL Server performance.

The following topics will be addressed during the course:

  • Datacenter Fundamentals
  • Infrastructure Stack Fundamentals
  • Storage and SAN Concepts and Design
  • Networking and Interconnect Topologies
  • Physical Server Technologies
  • The SQL Server Virtual Machine
  • High Availability and Disaster Recovery
  • Performance Investigation and Tuning of the Entire Stack

A working set of the screens and configuration settings referenced in the session, together with the reference slides and documentation, will be provided to attendees, for strategic reference in working with SQL Server and the infrastructure underneath in their own environments.

We are really happy to be delivering this precon, and are look forward to seeing you all there! Reserve your seat at this exciting event here. Tickets are available at just $110!

Speaking at SQL Saturday Minnesota

Heraflux is proud to be participating in this year's SQL Saturday Minnesota on Saturday, October 1st.

David Klee is presenting two sessions at this exciting event. The first is on behalf of VMware Corporation, entitled "Advanced SQL Server on VMware Features".

Session Abstract: The world's most powerful virtualization platform, VMware vSphere, contains a number of hidden gems that DBAs can use to make their SQL Servers more highly available and perform better. The demos in this session have been developed to illustrate a few key capabilities of VMware vSphere and VMware NSX that can be used to enhance the overall SQL Server implementation. Features such as vSphere vMotion, vSphere HA, Distributed Resource Scheduler and Fault Tolerance are complimentary to all the features and capabilities of SQL Server and create an unparalleled combination of the world’s top RDBMS and the world’s most complete and effective virtualization proposition. With network virtualization NSX can provide security enhancements unachievable with any other technology and can streamline SQL server deployment automation processes. Please join us for this demonstration of advanced vSphere and NSX feature functionality and an explanation as to how this enhances your SQL Server environment.

The second session is a more hypervisor agnostic session entitled "Virtual SQL Servers. Actual Performance." Bring your virtualization and infrastructure questions!

Session Abstract: Virtualizing your business-critical SQL Servers should not imply that they will run slower than if they were physical. When properly architected and managed, virtual SQL Servers should be equally as fast as their physical counterparts, if not faster. However, if not properly constructed, silent and seemingly random performance killers can strike and significantly hurt your database performance.

This session is packed with many tips and tricks gained from years of experience for getting the most performance from your virtual SQL Servers. The major roadblocks to performance will be discussed and the knowledge gained will help you work with your infrastructure engineers so you can optimize the system stack for performance. Tools, techniques, and processes will be demonstrated to help you measure and validate the system performance of the key components underneath your data.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Speaking at SQL Saturday Dallas

Heraflux is proud to be participating in this year's SQL Saturday Dallas on Saturday, September 24th. David Klee is presenting a redeveloped version of a session called "Objective SQL Server Performance" at 11:00 am in Room 100.

Session Abstract: “It’s slow! FIX IT!” is not a fun way to walk into the office on a Monday morning. However, putting objective metrics to the subjectivity of ‘slow’ is as much a science as it is art. Performance engineering takes effort well before an issue arises. Collecting the right metrics, trending and comparing against an established baseline, and identifying bottlenecks are all part of the performance process. This interactive session will help the DBA fine-tune their performance tuning approach so that the foundation for long-term proactive performance review is in place. The DBA can then shift the job responsibilities from a reactive response to a more predictive and proactive role.

We look forward to meeting you there!
