SQL Server User Group

Chicago SQL Server Users Group Presentation

I'm thankful to be presenting for the Chicago SQL Server Users Group with a remote session called "Modern CPU Architecture and SQL Server Performance" this Thursday, July 9th, at 5:45pn eastern time. RSVP for this event here!

Modern CPU architectures are complex and misunderstood, especially as they relate to SQL Server instance configuration and database usage patterns. Default values in virtualization and the SQL Server instance can cause misalignments and improper balance in the way the SQL Server lines up with the CPUs and memory, which results in an immediate (and silent) performance penalty. Come learn as we discuss topics such as physical and virtual NUMA, hyperthreading, query parallelism, and instance settings, and show you how to validate your SQL Server architecture and improve the performance of your critical SQL Servers for both on-prem and cloud-based SQL Servers.

The addition of virtualization into the datacenter changed everything and gave birth to the cloud, but what is really going on under the hood?

Virtualization and cloud IaaS have a lot of similarities, and in this session we will explore the various layers, such as storage, interconnects, operating systems, the VM construction, all from the standpoint of performance and availability.

Maintaining a working understanding of these layers will make you a stronger database professional. Both on-premises virtualization and cloud will be compared and contrasted.

Bring your questions and learn more about what’s actually under the database!
